JJ's Journey into the Wise Wood

 - a story book to help children with stress and anxiety

JJ’s Journey into the Wise Wood tells the story of young JJ, who begins the day feeling all ‘wibbly wobbly.’

A friendly bee takes JJ on a journey to the Wise Wood, where the creatures there demonstrate their strategies to keep JJ calm and happy and to become more resilient.

Devon based author, Judith Hasell is a speech and language therapist with many years of experience in supporting children and young people with communication difficulties.

Judith has written this book to help young children overcome stress and anxiety by practising simple exercises and games.

Judith is also a qualified yoga instructor, and uses many of the techniques presented in the book to bring these children to a place of emotional regulation.

The book is beautifully illustrated by Lolly Mann, another Devon resident. Her lovingly presented pictures of JJ and the woodland creatures bring JJ’s adventures to life.

The ‘Join in with JJ’ section at the end of the book contains additional information about the exercises and techniques featured in the story. This helps parents and teachers to reinforce the games and show children how they can apply them to their everyday life.

Judith says “The last year has put additional strain on families and children as they have tried to cope with lockdowns and home schooling. Sadly, research is showing us that children are now showing clear signs of anxiety at a much younger age. It is vital that we teach children ways in which they can easily communicate these feelings to others, show them that there are ways in which they can be helped and ways in which they can help themselves to feel better. Learning these strategies will benefit them – not just right now - but will set them up to cope with problems which they may also encounter them in later life.”
