Meet Vesper and her Christian family:

Vesper and her family belong to an independent community church. There are many different denominations (groups) which are all part of Christianity. Different names are given to their places of worship such as church (e.g. Church of England, Church in Wales, Catholic), chapel (e.g. Methodist, Baptist, United Reformed), cathedral, meeting house ((Quaker / Society of Friends), kingdom hall (Jehovah’s Witnesses). citadel (Salvation Army).

Christians believe that God is the creator of the world. The account of creation is found in the Bible in the book of Genesis (the first book of The Old Testament).  One of the key messages of the story of the creation is of stewardship - that God made humans and gave them responsibility for caring for all other animals.

The most sacred book containing teachings for Christians is the Bible.  This is one book within which is contained sixty-six books. These sixty-six books were written by many different people believed to be inspired by God or the events they witnessed.  The Bible provides Christians with a code of conduct and contains teachings which they can apply to different aspects of life.  Many Christians see the Bible as ‘God’s Word’ and therefore truth.

Easter is the most important Christian festival as it celebrates the resurrection (coming back to life) of Jesus.  Christians believe that Jesus overcame darkness and death.  It is a time of hope and renewal when Christians celebrate new life.

Christian teachings are rooted in the Ten Commandments as given by God to Moses. Jesus taught that of God’s Law as given to the Jews, the greatest and most important laws are to ‘Love God’ and to ‘Love Thy Neighbour’.  Jesus also gave many teachings on the way people should conduct themselves in life.  The most significant of these teachings was given on Mount Sinai and is therefore known as The Sermon On The Mount.
